2010 Special Events

Wine on the Fly

The High Lonesome and K-T Ranches will host a unique event for Wine on the Fly and Fly Rod and Reel Magazine. Join us from July 14-18, 2010 for three-days of prime-time fly-fishing and wine tasting. Fish and socialize with some of the best-known editors and writers in the industry as well as some of the premier vintners from the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Joe Healy, Associate Publisher of Fly Rod and Reel will discuss fly-fishing and writing with guests, and a special visitor will be John Gierach, the best-selling author in the history of the sport.

Event founder Brian Lamborn of Lamborn Family Vineyards created Wine on the Fly around his two favorite pursuits. “One of the best parts of combining my two passions is that I get to spend time with like-minded folks doing what we all like to do: fish and enjoy great wine. Add world-class wineries and editors and writers to the mix, particularly those from Fly Rod and Reel magazine, and our cup runneth over.”

Lamborn Family Vineyards, a third generation family winery, creates some of the top Cabernets and Zinfandels from Napa Valley’s prestigious Howell Mountain. They do all of the farming on their own volcanic soil vineyard, and these high-quality grapes are then transformed into wine by celebrity winemaker, Heidi Barrett. Accompanying Lamborn Family Vineyards are two other elite Napa Valley and Sonoma Vineyards. Founded over a decade ago, StoneFly Vineyards makes extraordinary wines from the Napa and Russian River Valleys. Fly rodders by nature, a percentage of each bottle of wine purchased goes to restoring coldwater fisheries. StoneFly cultivates the ideal grape for a true varietal character, and are partners with the Vermont-based Orvis Company. Also joining the group is Schug Carneros Estate. Founded in 1980, Schug is located in the ideal cool, marine climate that enables them to focus on world class Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Schug combines traditional processes with modern procedures with exceptional results. The total value of wine that will be poured is $20,000.

The High Lonesome Ranch couldn’t be happier to host the event! Not only will anglers sample a different wine each day, they will also fish a different type of water as well. From sight fishing on the ranch spring fed ponds to a drift boat fish on either the Colorado or Roaring Fork rivers, to a walk and wade on the K-T’s White River and sight fishing on one of the K-T’s three spring creeks, we guaranteed that you will be over fished. We worked with Wine on the Fly and Fly Rod and Reel to schedule the event far enough after the end of run off to ensure excellent fishing. At the end of each fishing day, anglers will enjoy contemporary ranch cuisine paired with the evening’s featured winery and their wines. After dinner, relax around the fire pit with live entertainment. Learn more about the vineyards and the wines, and discuss fishing with some of the foremost authorities on the subject.

The cost of the trip is $3200/single occupancy and includes: lodging, meals, wade guides, driftboats and guides, gourmet meals, evening wine presentations, gratuities, and more. Each participant will also receive a complimentary nine foot-five-weight Winston B-II MX rod, with each participant’s name inscribed in the blank, courtesy of Wine on the Fly. Reservations are limited to 25 participants on a first come/first serve basis.
